In July my best friend, Jill, since Jr. High School got married. For her bachelorette, the week before her wedding, we went to Ottawa to celebrate. This was the beginning of a ten day trip from Ottawa to Halifax to Kentville, NS and I was super excited since I had never been to any of these places. I love to travel and getting to explore some more parts of my own country made my decision to say Yes to all events surrounding Jill’s big day very easy.
I took a red eye flight to Ottawa and arrived there on Friday morning ready to P-A-R-T-A-Y. Our first stop was A&W for breakfast since that was Jill’s favorite and then the liquor store, obviously. The cool thing about Jill’s bachelorette was that we had a lot of fun things planned that weren’t just going to the bar (can you tell we’re 30 now? ha), so the first event was the Diefenbaker Escape Room followed by dinner and drinks at a cool vegetarian spot called Pure Kitchen. I am a huge fan of all kinds of Asian fusion and the mushroom tofu dumplings were oh so good!
The next day we woke up fairly early and went to North Grower’s Farmers Market around the corner from the friends house who we were staying with for part of the weekend. The market was small but very cute. We grabbed some coffee from No Go Coffee and “Ottawa’s best butter tart” for a light breakfast before we headed downtown for a bottomless mimosa brunch.
I honestly didn’t even know that bottomless mimosa brunches existed and when I experienced it for the first time I was blown away. We definitely need somewhere like this in Calgary! The Vanitea Room was so cute and exactly what it sounds like, a classy little tea room. I decided to test run an avocado toast along with my bottomless mimosas and I was not disappointed. Avocado toast is another thing that I had yet to try because it seems very hipster to me, but I gave it a go and it was really good! After about 12 mimosas we decided we were done with this spot and headed to the parliament buildings where we roamed around for a while before going back to our Air BnB and getting ready for our night out on the town.
On our last full day in Ottawa we went to Le Nordik Spa which is actually in Quebec and I keep forgetting I made it to that province as well, oops! It was a lovely relaxing day. We finished it off by grabbing donair and going to the parliament building to watch the short film they project onto the main building every night in the summer.
On Monday we left for Halifax, NS in the evening so we did a canoe tour through the locks in the canal in the morning before heading to the airport. Overall my first trip to my countries capitol was pretty spectacular. We did and saw more than I have ever done on any bachelorette and I am really thankful to have been a part of such an awesome weekend. And hey, I learned I need to open a bottomless mimosa brunch restaurant in Calgary so it wasn’t all just fun and games ;).
